Katie Skelly & Meghan Turbitt

Media Title

If you only see two lady comic-book artists present their work for your enjoyment this week, be sure to make it Meghan Turbitt and Katie Skelly. The New York City-based duo—who create very-cool print and web comics independent of each other—will be coming though Philly to read and sign their oft-cynical, oft-feminist, always humorous offerings.

Claiming her ideas come from the profane jokes she grew up with in her blue-collar Irish Catholic community in Rhode Island, Turbitt’s pages often depict short vignettes in a young woman’s life. One particularly funny and recent comic, #foodporn, partially depicts her at a pizza joint. She orders a slice and thinks to herself what a “loser” the smelly man behind the counter is. Soon, in her head, she turns him into a muscle-bound hipster and gleefully lets him cradle her in his arms as he handfeeds her the cheese slice.

Skelly’s art is a bit more sci-fi. Her first notorious project was something called Nurse Nurse, which Skelly—who initially attended Philly’s Moore College of Art and Design as an undergraduate—called “a psychedelic comic about nurses in space.” Since creating that first comic in 2007, she’s printed it and 10 others, including her latest, Operation Margarine, in which two badass girls ride a motorcycle through the desert “holding their own against the elements, biker gangs and each other.” // RANDY LOBASSO
