Jim Stephens’ Full Tilt Boogie

Media Title

The musical side of Independence Day weekend gets off to a soulful start tonight, as the 10 jazz jammers of Jim Stephens’ Full Tilt Boogie headline a no-frills funkadelic bill. Gradually united over the course of many years, this crew represents some of Philly’s finest touring musicians. Led by the eponymous Jim Stephens on steel guitar, FTB also employs, among others, Chuck Treece on drums, Elliott Levin on tenor sax and Rah Sangee on keyboards. The result of Stephens’ deliberate musical alchemy is an energetic synthesis of various genres, amalgamated into an upbeat hybrid of rich, infectious rhythms you won’t soon forget.

Stephens and Co. will be joined by Philly funk rockers Johnny Popcorn, the brainchild of Chester-born rapper Hezekiah and esteemed bassist and producer Tone Whitfield, who joined forces in 2011; singer Marjani Clark came aboard last, but she’s certainly not least. Often riff-heavy and always entertaining, Johnny Popcorn adds a little sarcasm to that old Philly soul sound. Their originality and flair has landed the group among the finalists for Afropunk’s Battle of the Bands in NYC. Kinyon Lanier, a member of Full Tilt Boogie, will also be lending his vocal stylings to get this jam kicked off. Don’t sleep on what’s sure to be an excellent exhibition of some of Philly’s most progressive, dedicated on-stage talents. // DANIEL GELB
