The Barrymore Award-winning trio Mike Doherty, Alex Bechtel and Greg Nix (who together form the fledgling company Los Jarochos) may have the best premise of any Fringe show this year with the scenario for their murderous musical Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble Must Die. In case you don’t know, Coon and Dibble are Philadelphia musical performers who between them have nabbed nearly every plum role in a local musical during the past decade. Die follows two frustrated thespians who, after a string of failed auditions, decide that in order to fulfill their dreams of musical theater stardom, Coon and Dibble must be eliminated. Aided by an unemployed assassin and an overzealous theatre buff, they hatch a plan to kill the absurdly talented Coon and Dibble in a daring attack at the Walnut Street Theatre. Part action thriller and part musical extravaganza, the show employs songs, dream ballets and even Power Point presentations in a musical that simultaneously satirizes and celebrates Philadelphia’s thriving theater community. -J.
