Esperanza Spalding

Media Title

All those female Justin Bieber fans who went to Twitter and wished death on Esperanza Spalding when she won the 2011 Best New Artist Grammy over the Boy Wonder are yet another sad reminder of how lost our nation’s youth have become—right alongside soaking tampons in vodka and cramming them in the holiest of holies to get drunk, and Twilight. When Spalding won, girls didn’t see a lady they could look up to: a talented, beautifully Afroed, jazz musician who has managed to become a critical, sought-after darling on her own terms. No, all they saw was some bass-playing chick they’ve never heard of take an award away from their precious Beebs. My, how things have changed. If this were 20 years ago, back when indie goddesses like Liz Phair and PJ Harvey were basically the soundtrack for the Gen-X-era American girl, Spalding would be right up there on the playlist (right next to Dionne Farris and, maybe, Des’ree). It’s highly unlikely any of the haters will be at Spalding’s Philly show this week, but on the off chance any protesters still lurk, please kindly remind them that they worship at the altar of disposable, toxic culture and, hello, they don’t even like Bieber anymore, they like One Direction. Shallow heifers. -Craig D. Lindsey
