El Gran Varón: The Latin LGBTQ Community 26 Years Later

Join Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas and GALAEI as we present the first Tertulia of 2014, “El Gran Varón: The Latin@ LGBTQ Community, 26 Years Later”.  Recorded in 1988, ‘El Gran Varón’ by Willie Colón was the first song performed by an established artist that alluded so specifically to the HIV epidemic impacting individuals across the U.S. While the theme for the Tertulia is inspired by this salsa classic, we will be dedicating the majority of the night to contemporary creative works that continue this much needed conversation in our present day. Such contemporary creative works include a premiere of the mixed media project; “The Gran Varones” by Louie Ortiz-Fonseca that seeks to explore the intersections of Gay and Latino identity in Philadelphia while also shining light on what being ‘OUT’ and ‘PROUD’ means to us and our families. We will also be featuring a showcase of creative writing and spoken word by GALAEI youth and invite members of the community to join in on the conversation.  Admission: 10$, 5$ for Students Follow and use our hashtag: #ElGranVaronPhilly
