The Classical Liberal Constitution

Influential legal scholar Richard A. Epstein of NYU Law School offers his distinctive interpretation of the U.S. Constitution—the classical liberal theory. Steering clear of popular debates between defenders of originalism and proponents of a living Constitution, Epstein employs close textual reading, historical analysis, and political and economic theory to urge a return to the classical liberal theory of governance that animated the framers’ original text, and to the limited government this theory supports. A book sale and signing of Epstein's book The Classical Liberal Constitution: The Uncertain Quest for Limited Government will follow the program. This program is presented in conjunction with the National Constitution Center’s upcoming exhibition displaying one of the 12 surviving copies of the Bill of Rights, starting fall 2014.
