Jefferson, Philadelphia, and the Founding of a Nation

The first of a three part series, this exhibition commemorates Jefferson’s long association with Philadelphia. Visitors are offered a rare opportunity to see Jefferson’s handwritten draft of the Declaration of Independence, including passages later deleted by Congress. Letters in the hand of Jefferson, Franklin, and other APS members reference events leading to the writing of the U.S. Constitution, while period objects such as a pistol and a powder horn, evoke the Rev. War and British occupation
