From Constantinople to Cappadocia

The Penn Museum opens the expansion of its current exhibition, Vaults of Heaven: Visions of Byzantium, with this program focusing on two important areas of Byzantine cultural activity. Constantinople was the undisputed capital of Byzantine culture, well known for its mosaic-filled churches. While the volcanic region of Cappadocia is less well-known, artists from Constantinople painted many of its well-preserved cave churches. This program examines the respective artistic contributions of both.
