Materiality: Erin E. Castellan & Jonathan Mandell

Media Title

Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Materiality featuring mixed-media works by Erin E. Castellan and mosaics by Jonathan Mandell. Both artists employ various materials to create not only visually engaging work but richly tactile as well. In the hurried digital world of today, Erin Castellan hopes to slow the viewer’s gaze through imagery that is not easily recognizable. Her collaged fabrics are combined with paint, embroidery, knitting and crochet which encourage engagement with the physical world. Those who take their time looking are rewarded with the reveal of intriguing relationships between forms, colors and textures. For Jonathan Mandell, mosaic is the meeting place of drawing, painting and sculpture. Choosing among glass shards, broken vessels, semi-precious stones and shells, he uses the material’s natural form to create his bas-relief compositions. Infusing an uplifting, narrative quality to his imagery, Mandell’s mosaics provide endless opportunity for visual and tactile exploration. Erin Castellan received a BFA in Textile Design from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Painting from Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, Indiana University. She is the recipient of many grants, fellowships and residencies, including at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout the United States from Seattle, Washington to Louisiana and most recently at the William King Museum in Virginia. Jonathan Mandell earned his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and is adjunct faculty at Drexel University and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His mosaics are represented nationally by galleries from California to Florida and New York. He has received numerous public commissions including the National Constitution Center, Nemours Dupont Hospital and Citizen’s Bank Park; his current project is for SEPTA’s Cecil B. Moore station. Materiality is on view from November 29, 2013 – January 4, 2014 and is free and open to the public. The opening reception is Friday, December 6 from 5-8 pm. The artists will be available to answer questions about their work on Sunday, December 15, 1-4 pm with a gallery talk at 2 pm.
