From Paradise to Pavement

Opening reception of an exhibition of landscape paintings showcasing 13 artists.

Landscape painting oddly enough is a “modern” practice of the fine arts tradition. The turning points for artists to take their practice to the outdoor setting were prepared paints, safer environments, and the freedom to choose the muse. Prior to the late 1800’s artists were restricted to their studios, relying on studies and memory to develop scenes. The results were more than impressive in many accounts. But the practice of plein air painting allows for a wider range of subjects, accurate accounts, and the challenge of painting from life as the sun plays its game of shadows minute by minute. Artists who paint outdoors also enrich their works by unseen elements, subconsciously, as they are part of the environment, influenced by senses other than just sight.
