Hoodoo Love by Katori Ha

Media Title

Set in 1930’s during the height of the great depression in Memphis, Tennessee, Hoodoo Love is a soul-stirring story of magic, sex, blues, secrets, and the redeeming power of love. The play centers on Toulou, a young woman searching for healing in the power of her mighty voice. Toulou flees the harsh cotton fields of Mississippi to pursue her dreams of the spot light singing the blues on Memphis’ legendary Beales Street. Persuaded by Candylady, a feisty, wise-cracking Hoodoo woman, Toulou risks everything by giving into the allure of Hoodoo magic to cast an intoxicating love spell over the allusive heart of the haunted traveling blues man, the Ace of Spades. But when Toulou’s brother Jib comes to town, even magic can’t save her from a past filled with secrets that threaten to shatter the future she desperately needs.
