Unsolicited and This is Elsewhere

Media Title

NOVEMBER 2 - DECEMBER 15, 2012 Opening Reception: Friday, Nov 2, 6:00- 8:30 PM Pentimenti Gallery is pleased to present two solo exhibitions: Unsolicited, a solo exhibition of works on paper by Francesca Pastine, and This is Elsewhere, a solo show of paintings by Jackie Tileston. FRANCESCA PASTINE Unsolicited Works on paper FRANCESCA PASTINE has changed her friend’s unwanted ARTFORUM magazines into works of art that exude emotional power and create a palpable complexity of form and information. Her X-acto blade mimics a pencil, subtracting rather than adding, revealing layers upon layers of a visceral topography of art trends. The finished work becomes an unsolicited collaboration with the magazine and the cover artist. This manipulation changes the inherent character of the magazines, and retains their association to what they are, carriers of information that have been handled, earmarked and scuffed over time. The square dimensions of the magazine will be transformed into pieces that are full of intrigue, making Pastine’s debut in Philadelphia a lasting impression. The exhibition will display seven of her ARTFORUM excavations that embody her concept. Francesca Pastine received both her BFA and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Pastine 2013 exhibition will be at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, Charlotte, NC and past shows were at the Art Institute of Portland,Portland,OR; Kala Art Institute, Berkeley,CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco,CA; Berkeley Art Center, Berkeley, CA and more. She has received several awards and grants including the Kala Art Institute Fellowship Award in 2010 and 2011; Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; and more. JACKIE TILESTON This is Elsewhere Paintings JACKIE TILESTONS’ paintings float upon a base of Western traditions along with Taoist landscapes, floating worlds, the colors of India and tantric raptures, the infinite webs and one world theories of contemporary science, and mediated images. The swishing of celestial forms that intersect with the thick chunks of paint create a mystical and intriguing world. She allows her paintings to range from slow and contemplative to ecstatic and sensory overload, wanting them to function as integrative systems. Six of her large scale, oil and mixed media paintings on linen, accompanied by other works will show polysemous images that shudder between assertion and dissolution, probing the possibilities of magical fact. The paintings become interlingual, translating from one level of experience to another. Jackie Tileston received her BFA from Yale University, New Haven, CT, and her MFA in painting from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Tileston has had exhibitions at the Discovery Museum, Bridgeport,CT; Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, TX; Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, Auburn, NY, Rockland Center for the Arts, West Nyack,NY, and more. Her work is in collections including: JP Morgan Chase; Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; Dallas Museum of Art and West Virginia University Art Museum. She has been awarded the Joan Mitchell Foundation 2011 Painters and Sculptors Grant . The exhibitions open on November 2nd with an opening reception from 6:00-8:30PM.
