Making Way: Defining the Urban Landscape of the Ben Franklin Bridge (1983-1988) Photographs by J.B. Abbott; Curated by Blaise Tobia Print and Picture Hallway Gallery August 27 - October 27, 2012 “Making Way: Defining the Urban Landscape of the Ben Franklin Bridge (1983-1988),” is an exhibition of photographs by James B. Abbott depicting the bridge and the Philadelphia neighborhoods underlying and surrounding its western terminus. This section of urban landscape underwent a radical transformation during these five years, as long-planned connector roads were completed. Framed to include the Ben Franklin Bridge as an ever-present urban icon, these large color photographs capture an abandoned and decaying riverfront and the emptied-out blocks that were in the process of becoming the Vine Street Expressway. At the time, Abbott resided in this neighborhood, so he was a knowledgeable and keen observer. The nuanced photographs reveal this intimacy.
