JIM COBB "Passages" October 12 - November 4, 2012 Opening reception: Oct. 12th, 6 to 9 PM Oklahoma –born, Philadelphia-based artist Jim Cobb creates thickly layered figurative and abstract oil paintings which reflect personal visions rather than objective images. His evocatively textured compositions conjure surfaces and tones that speak eloquently of lived experience without sacrificing their singularity. His works range dramatically from Cubist-influenced still lifes and Expressionist figures to dynamic abstract drip compositions . Despite this incredible stylistic variety---which finds Cobb painting in both thin, sinuous lines and thick, sharp brushstrokes—there is a striking consistency to his oeuvre. In both his figurative and abstract works, the individual marks and forms have a tendency to shift and blur into the backdrop creating a beautiful and unstable contrast between subject and setting. Whether looking at his hazily outlined figures fading into their surroundings or his innumerable abstract marks coalescing into vibrant networks of lines, it is easy to see that Cobb straddles a captivating boundary between individuated forms, subtly modulated shades and seductive impasto paint daubs. He balances these juxtaposed formal elements with painterly bravado switching from thickly applied figuration to drizzled abstraction.
