The folks at St. Bernardus make some of the world’s best Abbey ales, led by the remarkable Abt 12. This year’s Christmas Ale, a seasonal twist on their nearly perfect beers, brings to the table everything you expect from a Belgian strong ale—a light body, warming booze, taste and aroma that brings to mind brown sugar, plums, figs and toffee—but adds a pleasant array of winter spices to the mix. You’ll catch hints of cloves, nutmeg and cardamom in this highly carbonated brew, but they don’t dominate the show, instead serving to titillate your tastebuds rather than overpower them.
