PW's Year of Beer: Southern Tier 2xIPA

Brewing out of New York state, Southern Tier has made a reputation on big beers that take flavors and push them to absurd, at times barely drinkable, extremes. Their Crème Brulee, for example, is a liquid version of that dessert, while their popular Pumpkin is liquefied pumpkin pie. With that in mind, you’d be forgiven if you expected 2xIPA to be an extreme version of an IPA; after all, the name certainly suggests it. Well—sort of. At 8.2 percent ABV, it’s no small beer, and the malt base that forms its backbone is big and sweet. On the other hand, though, a ripping selection of West Coast hops give 2xIPA (when fresh) a bracing, brisk burst of citrus and pine, and it drinks like a much less imposing brew. Try this at Pitchers Pub or South Philly Tap Room, among others.
