PW's Year of Beer: Sly Fox Pikeland Pils

The pils is a quaffable style of beer, the kind of brew you throw back on a summer day while tossing a Frisbee, working in the yard, or playing horseshoes. Traditionally, American pilsners have been thin, easy to drink, and sometimes even a little watery. Not so with Pikeland Pils, brewed in Pottstown, PA by Sly Fox. Sure, it’s got the light straw color and easy drinkability you expect from the style, but “thin” and “watery” are not terms you’d use to describe this beer. It’s got grassy, herbal hops on the nose, a slightly peppery bite in the taste highlighting some burnt toast malts, and soft carbonation that makes it stand out from the typically brisk carbonation of the style. It’s a little bitter for a pilsner, but craft beer lovers won’t complain about that. On the next hot day, down a few of these at Moonshine.
