It may not feel like it, but spring is going to be here before you know it—and that means spring beers. If winter beers tend toward high alcohol and warming (often with a dose of winter spices), spring beers are often light, crisp, herbal and grassy. That’s why Saisons and farmhouse ales are popular when the trees start to go green again. Enter Shiner’s FM 966, a dry farmhouse ale that aims to be drinkable and hits its mark. You’ll get some hay and grass in the taste and aroma, along with the faintest touch of peppery spice. In all cases this is restrained, making for the kind of beer that begs to be enjoyed while tossing a ball around. No wonder Shiner is for the first time this year packaging it in cans. Watch for it to start appearing on taps in the weeks ahead.
