We love beer. That's why we're devoting an entire year to discovering (and drinking) cold ones from near and far. Know of a beer worth shouting out? Send us a note at

This beer is based on a true story. Years ago, the folks at Lagunitas used to have a Thursday tasting that featured free music, cheap beer and good times. They called this tasting “420” and, appropriately enough, it began at 4:20pm each Thursday. The term “420” has other meanings, though, and the California Alcohol Beverage Control Board took notice and launched an investigation. Sure enough, a few employees had marijuana. As a result, Lagunitas had its license to brew suspended for 20 days. This beer is in “honor” of that event.  A deep amber with sticky sweetness offset by piney, assertive hops, this beer walks the fine line between balance and aggressiveness with aplomb. You won’t even notice that it’s a hefty 9.75 percent ABV. Think of it as an English bitter turned up to 11. Try it out at Varga Bar and Kildare’s Pub Manayunk.
