Rarely brewed but always beloved when it is, the Berliner Weiss is a low alcohol sour wheat beer native to the region surrounding Berlin. There, it is traditionally served with sweet flavored syrup to balance out its intense sourness. Here in the States, we take this tart beer for what it is: a dry, cloudy, utterly refreshing delight. Fegley’s, known for their brewpubs in Allentown and Bethlehem, create a nice take on this style. Sourness is mild despite a potently tart aroma, its pleasantly fruity taste peppered with lemon, peach, and sweet grains. The carbonation is brisk, almost champagne like, and the finish dry. You’ll find few better styles of beer to enjoy on a warm spring day. Trying this one at Bainbridge St. Barrel House.
