PW's Year of Beer: Duvel

Few are the beers that can be called out in a single word. They are the Madonna’s of the beer world, a last name unnecessary because the first name carries all the weight. So while Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat (the Duvel Brewery, for non-Dutch speakers) brews a dozen different beers, the word “Duvel” means one thing.  This is the Belgian golden strong ale: a crisp, bold brew defining the style for hundreds of imitators. The cracker-like sweetness; the lively carbonation; the zesty, peppery kick; the earthy hopping; and, the deceptively bold alcohol content:  this beer is an absolute classic that any self-respecting beer geek should have at least once. Try it at St. Stephen’s Green, Iron Abbey and others.
