The spice must flow. Baltimore’s DuClaw Brewing Company brew up a fairly traditional Belgian-style blonde ale—straw-colored, notes of hay and grass and spring days, with mildly herbal hops to balance things out—then inject a whole mess of spices (chamomile, grains of paradise, and cardamom) to give this beer an unexpected twist. The result is a beer with aromas of citrus and perfume, and a flavor that mixes bready malts with herbal hops and aggressive spicing. A subtle fruitiness kisses each sip, too. The range of flavors here are all over the map. Traditional this ain’t. But it sure is intriguing. Those who do not like their beers kicked up with a load of spice need not apply. Try it March 26 at the DuClaw tapping at Bainbridge St. Barrel House.
