We love beer. That's why we're devoting an entire year to discovering (and drinking) cold ones from near and far. Know of a beer worth shouting out? Send us a note at tips@philadelphiaweekly.com.

Craft beer fans know that if you want the best IPAs, you should go west. That’s why this new-to-the-area IPA out of San Diego is a reason to rejoice for hop heads. And yes, Coronado’s Islander IPA will satisfy your craving for west coast style hoppiness. Even better, it will do so without wrecking your palate. The first sip has surprising suggestions of peaches and apricots, but that initial kiss of sweetness is quickly washed away by an assertive wash of hop bitterness. It’s not pure bitterness, though; the hops are juicy and flavorful, kicking off hints of orange and mango even as they lash into the soft, bready malts with their bitterness. Hop flavor is up front, yet the beer is wonderfully balanced. As IPAs go, this one is top notch. Look for it to start appearing on tap in Philly soon.
