PW's Year of Beer: Climax Extra Special Bitter

Climax Brewing, out of Roselle Park, NJ, is one of those little breweries that don’t get much attention in large part because they do what they do almost too well: brew simple, traditional beers that don’t draw a lot of attention to themselves. Yet each and every brew they do is rock solid. Their Extra Special Bitter, aka ESB, is a traditional English pub ale made for drinking pint after big, frothy pint. The fairly chewy body suggests caramel and toffee, but the sweetness is offset by herbal, almost spicy English hops. This is accented nicely by the fruity, floral nose. The finish is almost buttery smooth. Overall, a spot-on take on a classic English beer style—which is to say, it’s going to be overlooked. Try it for yourself at Jerry’s Bar.
