Philly Beer Week, the citywide celebration of suds we wait all year for, kicks off May 30! PW is counting down the days with Eric San Juan's daily spotlight of great craft beers everyone should get to know better.
Bock beers are traditionally dark and sweet, but the maibock is something a little different: light in color, a little hoppy, and boasting some warming alcohol, they are traditionally enjoyed in the month of May (hence the name). Pennsylvania’s own Troegs Brewing offers their take on this traditional German beer with Cultivator, an herbal, sweet brew designed for springtime drinking. This beer is pale, frothy, and slick in the mouth. The alcohol (just under 7 percent ABV) does not hide; it warms on the way down. Sweet grains, grass, and straw-like hops exist in a delicate balance with one another, forcing the drinker to pay close attention to what’s in their glass lest they miss the subtleties at play here. This one won’t be around long, so try it while you can at Johnny Brenda’s.
