Samuel Adams built its reputation on drinkable beers such as Boston Lager and their approachable seasonal brews, and aren’t really known for big, aggressive tastes. It’s not really a fair assessment—they’ve been experimenting with bold beers since the 1990s—but no matter. As long as there are beers like Double Bock out there, folks who look deeper into their portfolio than their famous lager will be rewarded. This deep mahogany beer pours thick as oil and has a sweet, heady aroma of dark malts, roasted nuts, and spiced chocolate. The taste suggested liquefied pumpernickel bread, rich caramel, and brandy-soaked cherries. Quite rich, balanced with a soft spiciness and gently herbal hopping. The alcohol doesn’t hide, warming with each sip. It’s easy to see why monks used to drink bock beers in place of a meal. See for yourself that Sam Adams can go big at Cedar Point and Pinocchio’s.
