Philly Beer Week, the citywide celebration of suds we wait all year for, kicks off May 30! PW is counting down the days with Eric San Juan's daily spotlight of great craft beers everyone should get to know better.
For those tapped into the international beer scene, the most exciting place for new and inventive beers may no longer be America. It’s Italy. The Italians have not historically been known for their beer, but in recent years they have enjoyed an explosion of small artisanal breweries founded by guys who don’t know the meaning of the word “rules.” NazionAle comes out of Piozzo, Italy, and provides a regional twist on the traditional golden ale. The first twist is that all the ingredients are locally sourced. What you’re getting here is a true Italian beer in every sense of the word. The second is how perfume-y and fragrant this beer is. White pepper, lemon grass, fresh apples and white wine aromas spring from the glass. Meanwhile, the taste is bright and grassy and herbal, like a quant countryside farm come to life.
