You don’t expect an herbal, spicy, Belgian-style beer to spring from the Jersey Shore, but that’s exactly what happened when the folks at Carton gave birth to Decoy, a beer that manages to elude getting pigeonholed into one particular style. The big, frothy tan head and deep amber color looks like an Abbey-style brew, but the mix of spicing distinguishes itself from the usual suspects of the style. Plenty of banana and clove in the aroma, as you’d expect, but also nutmeg, cardamom, and plums. The taste follows suit. Cinnamon and pepper and sweet bread and pie swirl together into a heady potion, followed by the warming burn of booze at the swallow (this beer is a robust 12 percent ABV). This is a big one, so play gentle. Try it at Bainbridge St. Barrel House.
