Welcome to PW's 50-Beer Countdown to Philly Beer Week! Every day from now through the Opening Tap ceremonies on May 31, we'll be getting in the mood by spotlighting a different great craft brew that's been poured by one or more Philly Beer Week participating venues.
“Lager, please.” What else is there to say? If you live in or around Pennsylvania, you can order a Yuengling by saying “lager.” It’s that easy. Never mind that “lager” is a beer style that many brewers do, such as the hugely popular Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and never mind that Yuengling does several other styles beyond lager, including a porter that is better than its price would indicate. You ask for a lager in or around Philly, and you’re getting a Yuengling. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s a simple, drinkable, quality beer, and it’s brewed by the oldest American-owned brewery in the country (since August Busch IV sold out Budweiser to an international conglomerate in 2008). So, yeah, bartender? Give me a lager. Yuengling Lager is probably available at your local auto parts store—that’s how available it is.
