In a state that boasts breweries like Tröegs, Victory and Yards, Weyerbacher is in the unenviable position of having to stand out among the embarrassment of riches that is Pennsylvania beer. And that’s not even getting into the fact that Philly has one of the highest concentrations of amazing beer bars anywhere in the country. Weyerbacher has managed to turn the trick due in part to beers like Double Simcoe IPA, a raging explosion of pine and bitterness that stands as one of the best double IPAs on the market. Brewed solely with Simcoe hops, it has plenty of the trademark grapefruit taste and aroma, with a resin-like edge that is tempered only by its earthy malt sweetness. It’s a beer that walks the fine line between aggressive and drinkable, managing to achieve the kind of balance lesser brewers just can’t muster. Plus, consider this: Both Weyerbacher and Sally Jessy Raphael hail from Easton, Pa. Coincidence? Double Simcoe IPA is sometimes available at Varga Bar and Standard Tap.
