You may not realize it, but the Irish dry stout is one of the world’s most consumed styles of beer—mostly thanks to a certain famous stout you can find on tap almost everyone you go. It’s an underappreciated style that manages to mix fairly robust taste with surprisingly low levels of alcohol, making it a great drinkin’ beer. O’Reilly’s Stout, by Pottstown’s Sly Fox, is a perfect example of that. At a modest 3.6 percent ABV even those pale fizzy macro lagers will have a bigger impact on you, but they certainly won’t have a bigger taste. Roasty malt, mild chocolate, hints of coffee, and toasted bread are balanced by only mild hop bitterness. A dry, chalky finish allows this beer to pair well with food, especially pub grub.
