Welcome to PW's 50-Beer Countdown to Philly Beer Week! Every day from now through the Opening Tap ceremonies on May 31, we'll be getting in the mood by spotlighting a different great craft brew that's been poured by one or more Philly Beer Week participating venues.

In the brewing world’s neverending quest to turn everything into an IPA, we’ve seen a lot of new variants on the style pop up in recent years. White IPA. Black IPA. Rye IPA. Orange Juice IPA. (I may have made that last one up.) California’s Firestone Walker takes two of those not-quite-an-IPA styles, mashes them together, and Imperializes them for good measure with Wookey Jack, a Black Rye IPA that clocks in at 8.3 percent ABV and 100 percent deliciousness. It’s almost better not to describe it and instead to just say “go get this beer NOW” — that’s how good it is. The juicy citrus of the hops float on top of a rich, dark malt base. The spicy rye cuts through the beer’s creamy, chewy texture. The bitterness and sweetness are in perfect balance. It’s nothing less than a masterful brew and stands as one of the very best black IPAs ever made. Go get this beer NOW. Wookey Jack may be available at Via Marconi and Grace Tavern.
