Copabanana was born in 1978 on Philadelphia 's famous South Street during that street's colorful renaissance. Starting as a tiny pub with a kitchen in the window the restaurant grew over the years to include four storefronts and an outside sidewalk cafe. The South Street Copabanana is a fun and casual place with neon lighting and wooden tables. The menu has grown, too. The signature gourmet burgers, fresh lime margaritas and Spanish fries remain the big draw, but the menu now also include full dinners with a tropical flair. A long parade of “Best” awards have honored the restaurants burgers, margaritas and fries as has the most recent Zagat's guide. Other Copabananas have followed, and now include one in University City at 40th and Spruce, one in the Northeast in Grant Plaza. Each Copa has its own neighborhood flavor and similar but slightly different menus. Recently, Copabanana has added an upstairs Tapas bistro called Coconut Grove that has a more tropical menu.
