In just a few years, California’s The Bruery established itself as one of the best brewers of sour beers in America, and this multiple award winning beer is a good example why. This Flemish red style of beer has all the puckering sourness you expect, but it’s far from a one-note song. This brew boasts loads of complexity thanks to extended aging in oak barrels and an extended fermentation with souring bacteria. Rich wood and vanilla merge with barnyard musk, aged leather, soft tobacco and sweet caramel drenched in sour plums for a beer of remarkable complexity. This concoction has beaten out many old school Belgian sours to claim multiple awards, and it’s easy to see why. Try this amazing brew at Hawthorne’s.

We love beer. That's why we're devoting an entire year to discovering (and drinking) cold ones from near and far. Know of a beer worth shouting out? Send us a note at tips@philadelphiaweekly.com.
