PW's Year of Beer: Starr Hill Whiter Shade of Pale Ale

These days, there is nary a style that has not been hopped to the bursting point and amended with an “IPA” tag. Whiter Shade of Pale, by Virginia’s Starr Hill, does exactly that with a classic witbier to create a White IPA made especially for summer drinking. The floral grapefruit aroma is heavily tinged with musky yeast. Each sip is touched with grapefruit as well, along with orange peel, crackers, and touches of spice. Bitterness is mild, the body is soft and approachable, and the rather hefty 7.5 percent ABV is well-masked. The “witbier” part is more dominant than the “IPA,” so drink with that in mind. You’re not going to want to throw back more than a few of these, but you’ll enjoy the couple you have. Try it at Flanigan’s Boathouse, Garrett Hill Ale House and The Goat’s Beard.
