The taps at our favorite ale houses have begun to fill with the traditional beers of autumn: Marzens, brown ales, harvest ales and the ubiquitous pumpkin beers. Based on its name, Southern Tier’s take on autumn brewing sounds like it fits with tradition; its deep straw color, almost bordering on orange, seems to fit the bill, too. But rather than being malt-forward and German influenced, this is a decidedly bright, bitter twist on the traditional English style called ESB, or Extra Special Bitter. Grassy, herbal hops and a big earthy bitterness make themselves known loud and clear, giving the toffee and light straw taste imparted by the malts a backing role.
