Cream ales are an underappreciated style unique to North America. Brewed like an ale but then cold-conditioned for extended periods like a lager, this hybrid style was once hugely popular but has since fallen off the radar of American beer drinkers. Thankfully, brewers like Neshaminy Creek, out of Croydon, PA, are making an effort to bring it back. Golden in color with a frothy white head, Croydon Cream Ale looks like a classic pub brew—and tastes like one, too. Grassy, with light sweet bread and grain notes, the herbal, subtly spicy hops are there solely to add a little balance to this beer. This is meant to be a soft, easy to drink beer, and that’s exactly what it is. A 12-pack of cans would be a beautiful thing. See if you agree at Grey Lodge and 2nd Street Brew House.
