PW's Year of Beer: Great Lakes Oktoberfest

This is the time of year for Oktoberfest beers, also known as Marzens, and few American breweries do a Marzen as faithful to the style as Cleveland’s Great Lakes Brewing. Made for the cool months of autumn, this amber lager has a chewy, bready sweetness with hints of caramel and toasted pumpernickel; earthy, herbal hops provide well-balanced bitterness. With brisk carbonation and a fairly robust strength for its drinkability (6.5 percent ABV), it’s easy to see why beers like this form the backbone of food-and-song autumn festivals. Many American breweries make an Oktoberfest beer, of course, but very few managed to breathe the same rarified air as classic breweries like Ayinger, Hacker-Pschorr, and Paulaner. Great Lakes, however, earns their way into the club. If you’re going to hoist a few tankards this fall, make sure at least one includes this beer.
