Get it when you see it, folks, because Dogfish Head’s entry into the world of dark Belgian ales has been retired from bottles. That means no more six packs for you—it’s draft only. That’s not a terrible thing, though, because on draft Raison D’Etre is a thing of beauty. Pouring a lovely mahogany color with a big cloud of white foam spilling from each glass, the aroma is a sweet mix of plums, brown sugar, and raisins. The experience intensifies with your first sip. The vigorous carbonation massages your taste buds, allowing the dark fruits, sweet bread, and almost wine-like raisins to wash all over your tongue. There is lingering bitterness in the finish, along with warming alcohol. You can’t get it at home anymore, though, so remind yourself why this is a classic at Grey Lodge and Side Bar.
