PW's Year of Beer: Dogfish Head Piecing Pils

In years past, Dogfish Head’s winter brew was an absurdly tasty coffee beer made with Mexican coffee beans, chicory and St. John’s Wort. This year, that seasonal beer is tossed to the curb and replaced with Piercing Pils, a robust pilsner brewed with pear juice. You read that right: pear juice. As is typical for Dogfish Head, the beer is stronger than usual—at six percent ABV, it’s slightly more potent than your average pilsner. It's totally accessible to the casual drinker, though: The pear juice, rather than taking the front seat, simply injects a subtle, sweet ripple into each sip that's easily offset by the grains and earthy hops. It's just offbeat enough to keep you on your toes, but normal enough to drink in mixed company; try it at South Philly Tap Room and Standard Tap.
