The barleywine was one of the first “extreme” styles of beers. So named because its alcohol content approaches that of wine, this English style of beer has been re-interpreted by Americans many times over. Bells’ version adheres fairly close to tradition, pouring a deep brown and offering aromas of sweet bread, candy and alcohol. Each sip is sweet and warm, with plentiful notes of caramel, licorice, candied nuts, figs and raisins. Mild hopping offsets the sweetness, but at its heart this is a beer meant for slow sipping (preferably with a cigar). Try it at Hawthorne’s or Isaac Newton’s, or try it side by side with other barleywines at the Barleywine Bonanza at Institute on March 8.
