The Belgian quad is one of the biggest, most complex styles of beer on the market, a style as robust as it is respected. Though popularized by Belgian and Trappist brewers, this big style has been increasingly brewed by Americans – and in the case of beers like The Reverend, they’ve wildly succeeded. Caramel, plum and raisin flavors swim alongside sweet cherry, orange peel and a red wine-like astringency. Earthy sweet breads temper the taste of dried fruits, while a slight acidity and mild spiciness add layers to the medley. There is a lot going on inside the glass, so if the 10 percent ABV doesn’t prompt you to take your time with this one, the complex tapestry of flavor will.
