The venerable Brooklyn Brewery have been making excellent beers for longer than almost anyone else in the craft beer scene, and from old standbys like their brown ale to experimental brews like Sorachi Ace they have maintained a high level of quality all that time. But this one plays with something we haven’t seen much of from Brooklyn before: smoke. Fire & Ice is a smoked oatmeal porter made with beachwood-smoked malts. You can tell from your first whiff, too. Peat smoke and woody smoke aromas rise from the glass. The taste combines that smokiness with sweet chocolate, tobacco, and hints of vanilla, offering pleasant sweetness that merges well with the smoky undertones of the beer. It’s alluring, a little mysterious, will make you want to dim the lights. This is a limited draft-only beer, so get it at Barcade while you can.
