Welcome to PW's 50-Beer Countdown to Philly Beer Week! Every day from now through the Opening Tap ceremonies on May 31, we'll be getting in the mood by spotlighting a different great craft brew that's been poured by one or more Philly Beer Week participating venues.
The pale little pilsner is the most consumed beer style in the world, and among beer snobs the most scorned. They tend to be light, yellow, fizzy and not much else. When done right, though, pilsner is a style proving that less can be more. Few American brewers, if any, do it more right than Victory. Prima Pils is widely hailed as one of the definitive beers of the style and the gold standard when it comes to showing what a pilsner can be, and there is a reason for that: It’s delicious. Don’t go in expecting big, bold flavors or anything of the sort. Instead, bask in the subtle, elegant balance of lightly toasted bread, faintly herbal hops, and mild bitterness that is just a pleasant snap in the aftertaste. It’s hoppier than a traditional pilsner, but these days that’s certainly not a bad thing. Victory Prima Pils is sometimes available at Drury Beer Garden and Field House.
