Welcome to PW's 50-Beer Countdown to Philly Beer Week! Every day from now through the Opening Tap ceremonies on May 31, we'll be getting in the mood by spotlighting a different great craft brew that's been poured by one or more Philly Beer Week participating venues.
Stone isn’t shy about breaking the rules. One might say they are a bit arrogant about the idea. (Groans all around.) When they make a barley wine ale, such as their Old Guardian, they load it up with hops because, hey, hopping up a beer just for the sake of it is what Stone does. But they’re not content to muck with the classic barley wine style in just one way. They like to take it a little further, so every other year they release “odd year” variations on this big brew. This year, they used smoked malts to impart a meaty, smoky flavor, and aged it on oak to add some woody intensity. The result is an experience more than a beer. This beer is BIG, boozy, potent, and swimming with layers of flavors you’ll take days to unravel. It's not for the faint of heart. Stone Old Guardian Oak-Smoked Barley Wine may be available at The Prohibition Taproom, but only for a limited time.
