Philly Beer Week gets started tonight. PW's Beer Lass gives her picks for the best events of the week
Philly Beer Week touts the town's status as one of the top craft brew cities in the country.
What is Cask ale? It's "real ale" that isn’t pasteurized and doesn’t use any extraneous carbon dioxide. It's served by way of a beer engine, a firkin or a pin.
Hand pumps popped up all over the city in 2008. In addition to long-term pumpers like Dawson Street and 700 Club, newcomers Prohibition Taproom, the Kite and Key and Sidecar Bar have embraced the craft. Most bars have sought out the expertise of Paul Pendyck of UK. There are currently over 70 Cask outlets in Pennsylvania—more than any other state.
Drinker will have plenty of opportunities to taste cask ale during Philly Beer Week. Here's a glance at some of the week’s "Real Ale" events.
Opening Tap @ the Comcast Center
Fri., March 6, 7pm. $40. Comcast Center, 1701 John F. Kennedy Blvd.
Yards ESA, which was originally formulated strictly for the beer engine back in 1995, is the firkin being tapped to officially kick off Philly Beer Week. How appropriate.
King Pin Challenge Standard Tap
Sat., March 7, 6pm. Pay as you go. Standard Tap, 901 N. Second St. 215.238.0630.
The first brewery to kick their pin will be crowned "King Pin" of Philly Beer Week. Expect to mingle with the men manning the casks.
Taste the Collaboration
Sat., March 7, 5pm. Pay as you go. Tria Washington Square West, 12th and Spruce sts. 215.629.9200.
Recently, "Professor" Tom Kehoe of Yards Brewing Co. taught a class at the Tria Fermentation School in which his pupils chose their own ingredients to make a one-of-a-kind firkin. Now they, and you, can finally consume it.
Sly Fox/South Hampton Firken Beer Off!

In one corner hailing from South Hampton New York, you have the affable Spence Niebhur and in the other corner, Sly Fox's Brian O'Reilly. Who can tap and kick first?
Philadelphia Real Ale Invitational
Sun., March 15, 1pm. $40-$50. Yards Brewing Company, 901 N. Delaware Ave. 215.634.2600.
The "Grand Firkin Finale" includes light fare, music and your favorite regional brews on cask.
