Yuengling is best known for its ubiquitous lager, the unofficial brew of Pennsylvania, but not many people realize that the flagship is a relatively new beer to the lineup, having been first introduced in 1987. The porter has a much longer history, dating back to the 19th century; for a time, in fact, Yuengling was the biggest producer of porter in the nation, and the brewery continued to make this beer even after porter had all but disappeared from the American landscape. A dark beer with notes of coffee bean bitterness, it’s lighter bodied than its deep brown color might lead you to believe, thin on the palate from start to finish. The beer has a softness not found in many porters, too, probably because it is fermented with lager yeast instead of ale yeast. This isn’t the rich, chewy porter you have come to expect from American brewers — and that’s what makes this worth trying. Yuengling porter is on draft at the Grey Lodge and other establishments.
