American craft beer has often been about going bigger, pushing boundaries and challenging drinkers—and to be honest, that can be exhausting. Sometimes, the last thing you want is a triple IPA brewed with grapefruit rind and an obscure brand of Jamaican coffee. (Note: I think I just invented something.) Sometimes you just want a beer. Yards Brawler is “just a beer”—a classically mild English session ale of the sort almost no one in America does anymore—and what’s more, it’s brewed right in Philadelphia. It’s malt-forward rather than hop-centric, and it has a modest alcohol content (just 4.2 percent), a medium body and a very clean finish. This reddish-brown ale has very little hop flavor to speak of, instead giving off notes of caramel, chestnut, and lightly toasted bread. Hop lovers will scoff, but those suffering from IPA fatigue will find refuge in Brawler’s gentle embrace. This Philly classic is available at many establishments, including Alla Spina, Rembrandt’s, St. Stephen’s Green, and Field House.
