PW's Year of Beer: Stone Smoked Porter With Chipotle Peppers

Stone’s smoked porter is an annual favorite, a beer that gets even more interesting when they release variations on it such as one with vanilla bean. This time around, however, their variation isn’t something sweet, it’s something hot. The chipotle pepper version of smoked porter is back for a limited time, and it sure is yummy. It wouldn’t be the first time Stone has played with peppers—their recent release called Crime was purely a delivery vehicle for them—but it might be their best effort with them. The light chocolate and mild smoke of the porter meld nicely with the lip-tingling heat of chipotle peppers. The heat is not overpowering or dominant, either. There is just enough to ensure each sip has some warmth, but not enough to mask the gentle roast and cigar smoke of the base beer. That combination of sweet, smoke and heat works in food, and works well in beer, too. Watch for this beer to start appearing on taps in the weeks ahead, for a limited time only.
