Ten years ago, Stone, the brewery behind Arrogant Bastard, began brewing Ruination: a beer named for the state your palate would be left in after drinking it. It’s an IPA with a powerful, blistering hop presence that pretty much dominates everything in its path. Last year, on Ruination’s 10th anniversary, Stone released RuinTen, a double IPA that took a beer already turned up to 11 and snapped off the volume knob. It was meant to be a one-time beer, but it proved so popular it’s back. And wow. The aroma alone is enough to knock you over. It’s so strong you might be inclined to use the word “stench” instead of aroma, awash in resiny pine, juicy citrus and a generous waft reminiscent of cat urine. (Really.) The beer itself is sweeter than you might expect—less abrasive than Ruination while still more aggressive than 90 percent of beers on the shelf. The booze is up front and warming, the bitterness clean, the hop flavor damp with grapefruit. This is one big beer with a lot going on in it.
